Origins of the Brand

Access4Attics was founded in the UK as Access4Lofts in 2005 by Tim and Lindsay Brown, a couple who had relocated from London to Devon seeking a better quality of life. When they needed safe access to their own attic and discovered that no professional service existed to meet this most basic of household requirements, Tim, a natural problem-solver, decided to tackle the project himself.

Friends and family who saw the work were impressed, and requests quickly followed. The gap in the market was obvious, and the opportunity was too compelling to ignore. Armed with Lindsay’s marketing expertise and Tim’s technical capability, they launched Access4Lofts as an independent business and began the process of turning a good idea into something that could be taught to others.

Building On A Strong Foundation (2005-2013)

For eight years, Access4Lofts operated successfully as a local Devon business as Tim & Lindsay worked hard to perfect their business model. In that time, they were able to develop:

Standardised installation methodologies that could be taught to others

Supply chain relationships for consistent product quality

Customer service protocols that generated repeat business and referrals

Marketing approaches that delivered consistent lead generation

Operational systems that could scale beyond the founders

By 2013, Access4Lofts was not merely a successful small business, it was a business system which had been proven time and again. Seeing the potential for expansion beyond their founding market, the Browns looked to franchising to take their business to the next level.

The First Franchisee and Proof of Concept (2013-2017)

Rather than rushing to market with multiple franchisees, the Browns took a methodical approach. Their first recruit was Graham Ormesher, a trusted friend and experienced businessman, who launched a pilot franchise in Preston, Lancashire, in 2013.

This pilot offered them a number of important strategic advantages:

Graham’s business acumen provided valuable feedback on franchise systems from an operator’s perspective

The geographic distance from Devon ensured the model could succeed without founder proximity

Graham’s success validated that the Access4Lofts model could be replicated by others

The results exceeded expectations. By 2017, the Preston franchise had achieved £327,000 annual turnover with an exceptional 85% conversion rate from quotes to orders.

Perfecting The Franchise Model (2017-2019)

In 2017, when Graham was approaching the end of his 5-year franchise agreement, Tim and Lindsay approached him to join the Access4Lofts Board of Directors and together the team launched into the next phase of their franchise plans.

Their first task was to improve their systems to be both more scalable on a national level, and to appeal to a wider range of franchisees.

Taking their initial man-in-a-van model, which was essentially a simple “business-in-a-box concept”, they added new and improved systems.

These included expanded supply arrangements, a new training centre, and a fully integrated, bespoke quoting, marketing and admin system, as well as an accounting support system.

The streamlined offering attracted a lot of success and, in just 18 months, Access4Lofts grew to 21 franchises.

Most importantly, Access4Lofts had demonstrated a strong market demand for a professionally-supported home improvement franchise with a unique offering.

Partnership with The Franchising Centre (2019-2024)

In September 2019, Graham Ormesher sought out the advice of The Franchising Centre (TFC) in order to help fulfil the franchise’s true potential.

TFC, as the UK’s leading franchise consultancy, brought deep expertise in franchisee recruitment, marketing, franchise relationship management, and technology platform development.

After comprehensive analysis of the Access4Lofts model, TFC developed a detailed 5-year growth strategy that aligned perfectly with the Access4Lofts vision.

The partnership launched in early 2020, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rather than derailing growth, this timing actually accelerated it.

Three factors converged:

Surge in Demand: People spending more time at home intensified the desire to optimise living space

Franchisee Pipeline: Economic disruption created talented individuals with redundancy packages seeking business ownership

Digital Transformation: Access4Lofts and TFC pioneered virtual Discovery Days, actually improving the recruitment process

During 2020-2024, the franchise achieved exceptional growth with 60-70% conversion rates on franchise leads. The partnership demonstrated that systematic processes, professional support, and clear value proposition could drive sustainable expansion even during economic uncertainty.

The Franchising Centre Acquisition (2024)

In early 2024, Tim and Lindsay Brown decided to retire, having built Access4Lofts from a small home business into a nationwide franchise.

Rather than seeking a traditional corporate buyer, they approached The Franchising Centre about acquiring the business.

TFC’s decision to purchase Access4Lofts represented an unprecedented strategic move which would bring:

Deep operational knowledge from five years of embedded partnership

Personal involvement in building recruitment, marketing, and support systems

Significant remaining growth potential (42 UK territories available, international expansion opportunity)

Ability to preserve the franchisee-centric culture and operational excellence

For master franchisee candidates, TFC ownership provides unparalleled specialist systems, international expansion expertise, and long-term strategic commitment not typically available with founder-led franchisors.

As of February 2026, Access4Lofts operates through a network of 68 franchisees covering 100+ territories across the United Kingdom, with a mix of single unit owner operators and multi-territory franchisees.
